about
This song was derived from our IWD Song-Lab with Alice Mary Jelaska, which was run across a couple of sessions over Zoom.
We have also created 50 tote bags and each workshop contributor will be provided a free bag. We will use the profits from selling the other bags and any donations from song downloads to raise money for the Pankhurst Trust and Manchester Women's Aid chosen by the wonderful workshop participants. Get your bags in the section above!
About the song:
All the main melodies, words and rhythms come directly from ideas that came up in the workshops.
We recorded additional strings and vocals after the Song-Lab - however the whole soundscape at the start of the song, most of the percussion sounds, and a couple of sung vocals at the end are sampled straight from the original audio of our Zoom meeting, to create a truly collaborative group work capturing the nature of online creative communities & connections - it is a piece of love & joy.
A poem by one of our participants, Cecilia Keuffer, is referenced in the song, which we would love to share:
lyrics
Tapestry
When I look at other women
All I see is the same as me.
How one piece breaks into thousands
And continues One, to be?
Like single stitches woven in an eternal tapestry
We are the thread that holds the fate of humanity.
Without us there is no fate to behold
Because we are the mothers of this world.
